Le Vieux Roi by Pablo Picasso depicts a regal figure rendered in the bold, expressive vocabulary of his late linocut period, executed as part of an edition of 160 in 1963. The work presents a crowned monarch whose weathered visage carries the weight of age and authority, his features built through the medium’s reductive structure.

The composition centres on the king's imposing head, crowned with a pink diadem punctuated by five circular emblems that suggest ceremonial regalia. Picasso works with a palette of earth tones—burnt umber and sienna for the flesh—set against sharper blues that define the outline and decorative elements. Spiralling motifs move across the surface, their repetition linking the crown, the face, and the surrounding space into a single field. Yellow accents punctuate the image, while the mouth, formed through broken lines, introduces a sense of tension within the otherwise controlled structure.

By 1963, Picasso was working with linocut in a fully resolved way. From his studio in Mougins, he used the medium for its directness—cutting into the block to produce images that retain the pressure and rhythm of the hand. The process remains visible throughout, with each carved line holding both descriptive and structural weight.

The black ground plays an active role, pushing the figure forward and giving it a defined presence. Rather than acting as background, it compresses the space, keeping the image contained and immediate.

The figure of the king sits within Picasso’s broader use of archetypal subjects—figures that carry meaning without requiring narrative. Here, the emphasis stays on the head itself, where line, colour, and repetition build a sense of weight and presence without overstatement.
