Six hard ground etchings produced in 2023, each one a phrase submerged in interference. The six prints share a logic: a brief fragment of American vernacular — This One, Zat So, Baby Jet, Ship Ahoy, At A Clip, Final Say — set against dense fields of etched lines that run at varying angles and densities across the plate. In some the lines streak diagonally, cutting through the lettering like static; in others they run horizontal, giving the text the quality of something glimpsed through rain or frosted glass. The phrases are legible but not easily so. You have to look.

Each print finds its own register within that shared structure. This One runs red diagonal lines across a pale ground, the serif lettering barely holding against the rush. Zat So sits in vertical gold striations, warmer and more static, an archaic query suspended in amber. Baby Jet disappears almost entirely into grey horizontal lines — the phrase you know from the Mountain Series reduced here to near-illegibility, its confidence stripped back. Ship Ahoy floats in pale blue horizontals, the maritime greeting appropriately hazy. At A Clip holds steady in olive and cream, the most composed of the six. Final Say closes the suite in red and blue diagonals, the title's finality undermined by the most turbulent surface of all.

Ruscha was in his mid-eighties when he made these, and the choice of hard ground etching — one of printmaking's oldest and most demanding processes — is not incidental. He had apprenticed under Saul Marks at Plantin Press in Los Angeles in 1958, and the handmade quality of the etched line runs directly counter to the mechanical flatness of the screenprints that made his reputation. These are marks that carry the hand. The phrases themselves are the kind of casual, throwaway expressions that drift through American speech without accumulating meaning — colloquial, maritime, idiomatic — and Ruscha treats them with the same even-handed attention he has always brought to petrol stations, swimming pools, and the word OOF. Nothing is too small to look at carefully. Nothing is too familiar to be worth asking what it actually does.
