Bow-Tie Rivet (2003) takes a stretch of desert boulder field — pale rock, sparse scrub, sandy ground — and folds it in half. The image is mirrored along its horizontal axis, the rock formations and vegetation doubling into perfect bilateral symmetry against a flat California blue sky. What was a piece of incidental landscape becomes, through the fold, something architectural, almost heraldic — a natural formation reorganised by digital process into a shape that the title names precisely.
The Bow-Tie Landscapes series, produced in 2003 as pigmented inkjet prints in an edition of thirty-five, applied this mirroring logic to various sites across the American West — desert terrain, palm-lined roads, open sky. The technique is straightforward producing strange: landscapes that look like they should exist but don't, nature submitted to a symmetry it never actually achieves. Ruscha had spent four decades treating the camera as a neutral collecting device, gathering material from the California landscape with the even-handedness of a surveyor. The Bow-Tie works introduce a different operation — not documentation but transformation, the landscape reorganised through a process borrowed from digital imaging instead of direct, real world observation.
The title does its usual Ruscha work. Bow-tie names the shape the mirroring produces; rivet names something fastened, fixed, held together at a point. The two words describe the image accurately without explaining it, which is precisely how Ruscha's titling tends to function leaving the viewer to determine what the thing actually means once located.
