Reflections On Soda Fountain (C. 257) by Roy Lichtenstein reimagines an ordinary American diner scene through the artist's celebrated Reflections series, transforming familiar objects into a sophisticated exploration of perception and representation. Created in 1991, the print depicts a classic soda fountain setting with a milkshake glass, disposable drinks cup and condiments, all disrupted by bands of translucent reflections that fragment and partially obscure the composition. Rather than simply depicting reality, Lichtenstein presents an image viewed through reflective glass, challenging the viewer to distinguish between the object itself and its mirrored surface.

The work exemplifies Lichtenstein's ability to elevate scenes from everyday American life into sophisticated explorations of image-making. Soda fountains occupied a nostalgic place within American visual culture, evoking diners, roadside cafés and post-war consumer optimism. By selecting such an instantly recognisable subject, Lichtenstein reinforces Pop Art's fascination with commonplace imagery while simultaneously distancing it through his highly controlled visual language.

The composition combines the artist's signature Ben-Day dots, bold black outlines and flat blocks of colour with the fractured reflective bands that define the Reflections series. These diagonal strips interrupt the image without concealing it completely, creating shifting layers of depth and ambiguity. Rather than functioning as realistic reflections, they become abstract compositional devices that encourage the eye to move across the surface, continually oscillating between illusion and flatness.

Produced during the final decade of Lichtenstein's career, Reflections On Soda Fountain demonstrates the artist's continued interest in perception, reproduction and the visual conventions of commercial printing. By merging an icon of everyday Americana with the conceptual complexity of the Reflections series, the work extends Pop Art beyond appropriation, inviting viewers to reconsider how familiar images are constructed, mediated and ultimately understood.
