Upholstery (1996) shows a fragment of a commercial shopfront — the facade cropped to a horizontal strip, UPHOLSTERY lettered across the fascia in spaced capitals, a louvred grille occupying the lower left, a small dark rectangle of window to the right. Soft grey washes suggest the tonality of an overcast day, the building caught in flat, even light. There is no street, no context, no indication of where in Los Angeles this sits. Just the front of a shop that fixes soft furnishings, presented as though it deserves the same attention as anything else.

That equivalence is the argument of the entire Archi-Props series. Produced in 1996 as lithographs in editions of twenty, the portfolio catalogued the commercial facades of Los Angeles with the same even-handed attention Ruscha had brought to petrol stations in the 1960s — upholstery shops, tyre centres, tool and die workshops, telephone exchanges. The buildings are not chosen for their architectural interest. They are chosen because they are there, because their signage is part of the city's self-description, because UPHOLSTERY painted across a fascia is as much a piece of typography as anything in a museum. Ruscha had understood since his first artist books that the designed environment of California was a legitimate subject for serious art, and the Archi-Props works extend that understanding into the quieter, less glamorous stretches of the commercial landscape.

The fragment is important. Ruscha does not give you the whole building, the street, the neighbourhood. He gives you the sign and just enough architecture to hold it — the louvres, the window, the fascia — and then cuts the image off. It is the same operation as Every Building on the Sunset Strip (1966), where the entire street was recorded with neutral completeness, but here compressed to a single facade, a single word, a single trade.
