Library (1994) shows a single-storey civic building on a corner, rendered in soft graphite greys against an overcast sky. The structure is plain — flat roof, rectangular windows dark against the pale facade, a litter bin on the pavement outside — and LIBRARY appears in a white panel on the upper right wall, block letters that identify the building without elaborating on it. The whole image has the quality of a building seen on a grey afternoon from a passing car: registered, noted, moved past.

That quality of noting without elaborating was central to the Archi-Props series, of which Library is among the most quietly affecting works. Where Upholstery and Mufflers deal in commercial facades — the signage of trade, transaction, the exchange of goods and services — Library introduces a different kind of institution, one built not around commerce but around the idea of public knowledge. It still gets the same treatment: isolated, centred, stripped of context, presented with the same flat attention Ruscha had brought to petrol stations thirty years earlier. The democratic logic of his eye does not distinguish between a Standard Oil forecourt and a municipal library. Both are buildings. Both have signs.

What Library does differently from the commercial works in the series is carry a faint atmosphere of abandonment. The windows are dark, the pavement empty, the sky heavy. The building looks less like a place people use and more like a place people used to use — a civic structure from the post-war decades when American towns built institutions and believed in them, now sitting in its car park waiting. Ruscha does not make this explicit; the image is as neutral as anything else in the Archi-Props portfolio. But the subject does some of the work on its own.

Produced as a lithograph in 1994 in an edition of twenty, Library sits within the Archi-Props series alongside Upholstery, Mufflers, Tires, and Tool & Die — a catalogue of California's commercial and civic architecture that treats the ordinary built environment as the proper subject of serious attention.
