Untitled (Dog Leg Study) by Jean-Michel Basquiat opens with anatomy and arrives at colonial history. The central image — a diagrammed dog's leg, annotated with notes on leverage, joints, and the mechanics of force — is surrounded by references that reframe what the study is actually about: the American occupation of Haiti, Sugar Ray Robinson and Jersey Joe Walcott, representations of Black identity in 1930s and 40s cinema, voodoo, and LIBERTY stamped on a coin. The body under examination is never only a body.
Basquiat's father was Haitian, and the American military occupation of Haiti — a twenty-year presence that reshaped the country's political and economic independence — runs through his work as a persistent undercurrent. To place that history alongside a diagram of leverage and joint mechanics is to make an argument about force that the anatomical language carries without needing to state directly. What bends under pressure, what bears weight, what can be held in a position against its nature — these are not only questions about bone and sinew.
What makes Basquiat's output so difficult to categorise is the speed at which it moves between sources — medical illustration, boxing, colonial politics, language, commerce — and the refusal to signal which of these is the primary subject. His years as SAMO on the streets of downtown Manhattan trained him to compress complex arguments into marks that could be read fast and understood slowly, and that compression never left his work even as the scale and ambition of what he was making expanded dramatically in the early 1980s. Untitled (Dog Leg Study) is a painting that rewards exactly that kind of slow reading — the anatomy lesson turns out to be about something else entirely.
