Untitled 2, from the Figure Portfolio by Jean-Michel Basquiat is the most frontal and confrontational figure in the series — a blue-headed form with exaggerated teeth and eyes, its torso divided into vertical sections in red, orange, and yellow, standing in heavy black boots with the date 01 4 1963 written large at the base. The surrounding image presses in from every direction, arrows, letters, triangles, and grids occupying the space around the body without quite touching it, the figure holding its ground through sheer insistence.
The date is significant — Basquiat was born on 22nd December 1960, making 1963 his third year — and its placement at the base of a work about a figure asserting its presence against surrounding pressure suggests autobiography without declaring it. Basquiat returned throughout his career to the idea of the self as something constructed under conditions — his Brooklyn childhood, his Haitian and Puerto Rican heritage, his early years moving between his mother's erratic care and his father's stricter household, the formative experience of being struck by a car at seven and spending weeks in hospital with a copy of Grey's Anatomy. The figure in Untitled 2 carries that history without illustrating it, the head masked and defended, the body sectioned and annotated, the whole image built from the kind of layered mark-making that Basquiat developed as a way of putting everything in without having to explain any of it.
What distinguishes Untitled 2 within the portfolio is the quality of resistance in the central figure — less exploratory than the others, more planted, the teeth bared and the eyes wide open, the surrounding density treated not as threat but as the normal condition of existence.
