Male Pelvis, Front View, from the Anatomy portfolio by Jean-Michel Basquiat pairs with the Female Pelvis, Back View elsewhere in the series — the same bone, differently named, differently oriented, placed in the same format on the same black ground. The male pelvis is presented from the front, labelled above and below, the drawing centred in the lower half of the sheet with the upper portion left empty. It is one of the simpler images in the portfolio, and one of the most deliberate in its simplicity.

The decision to include both pelvises — categorised by sex, drawn in the clinical tradition of comparative anatomy — sits within a history of medical classification that Basquiat was examining across the Anatomy portfolio without ever stating his argument directly. The nineteenth century produced an extensive literature on racial and sexual difference in skeletal structure, much of it used to justify hierarchies of intelligence, capability, and social worth. Samuel Morton's craniometry, the anthropometric studies that underpinned scientific racism, the obstetric measurements taken from enslaved women without consent — all of it operated through the same format Basquiat is using here: the black ground, the white line, the label, the clinical gaze.

He does not annotate this history or point to it. He draws the bone, names it MALE PELVIS, writes FRONT VIEW beneath it, and signs his name in the lower right corner. The gap between the neutrality of the format and everything that format carries is where the Anatomy portfolio does its most concentrated work — and Male Pelvis, Front View, alongside its counterpart elsewhere in the series, is where that gap is most quietly visible.
