Olympic, from the Daros Suite by Jean-Michel Basquiat places athletic competition and soap advertising in the same image and finds them indistinguishable. The work is organised in panels that recall both advertising layouts and competition brackets, a crowned figure at the centre surrounded by product copy, price markings, and branding language — the Olympic ideal and the commercial transaction given equal weight and equal space.
The 1984 Los Angeles Olympics — the Games from which the Soviet bloc withdrew — were the first to be fully commercialised under the model developed by Peter Ueberroth, who turned the event into a corporate sponsorship vehicle and demonstrated that the Olympic brand could generate profit at a scale that redefined what international sport actually was. Basquiat was in Los Angeles that year, the same trip that produced Hollywood Africans, and the city's relationship to spectacle, branding, and the construction of image was not lost on him. The soap branding running through Olympic is not incidental — soap advertising had a specific and well-documented history of racial messaging, its campaigns built around the promise of whiteness as cleanliness, and the product that sponsors athletic events turns out to be selling the same thing as the event itself.
Basquiat made the original work in 1982, two years before Los Angeles, but he was already reading the structure clearly — competition as a mechanism in which the value generated by physical performance accumulates at the level of the brand rather than the body. The athlete who wins is the product.
