Wolf Sausage, King Brand, Untitled (Dog Leg Study), and Undiscovered Genius by Jean-Michel Basquiat form a portfolio built around a single sustained question: what happens to something — an animal, a body, a musician, a culture — when it enters the mechanisms that assign it value. Each work approaches that question from a different angle, but the portfolio's coherence comes from the consistency of Basquiat's diagnosis across all four.
Wolf Sausage traces the transformation from something living and autonomous into a branded product, the wolf and the sausage as the before and after of a process that the copyright symbol marks as complete. King Brand maps the same logic onto the body itself — the anatomy labelled, the brain copyrighted, the Babylonian credit economy running beneath the medical diagram as the original infrastructure of debt and classification. Untitled (Dog Leg Study) reaches into colonial history, the mechanics of leverage and the American occupation of Haiti sitting alongside the dog leg's ball joint and the crossed-out names of boxers, the body as the site where geopolitical force becomes physical. Undiscovered Genius extends that argument into music — the bluesman standing at the intersection of Africa, the Mississippi Delta, and the Atlantic slave trade, his genius named and boxed, the griot tradition directly above him, the whole history of how Black cultural production was taken, credited elsewhere, and sold back as entertainment compressed into a single image.
Together the four works form Basquiat's most complete statement about the relationship between bodies, labour, knowledge, and value — the portfolio as argument rather than collection, each print necessary to the others in the way that each element of an economic analysis is necessary to the whole.
