Roy Lichtenstein

Still Life with Lobster (C.129) is the most densely composed of Roy Lichtenstein's Six Still Lifes — a lobster at the centre of a table laden with netting, rope, shells, a wine bottle, a starfish, and a window view beyond, the yellow ground pushing all of it forward against the picture plane with an energy that recalls the lavish banquet pieces of seventeenth-century Dutch painting without reproducing any of their painterly logic.
The lobster had been a fixture of that tradition for a reason. In the great Flemish and Dutch still lifes it was a luxury object — its vivid red a focal point, its surface a test of the painter's ability to render lustre, texture, and reflected light simultaneously. Lichtenstein's version strips all of that away,, there is no sheen, the form reads as a bold shape among other bold shapes rather than as a demonstration of painterly mastery. What replaces the material richness of the original tradition is something different — a density of objects and marks that produces its own kind of visual abundance, achieved through accumulation and colour rather than through the illusion of surface.
The implicit argument runs through the whole Six Still Lifes series but is sharpest here: in a picture where every object receives the same treatment — the same weight of outline, the same unmodulated colour, the same attention — the hierarchies that the Dutch tradition had built into the genre through differential handling simply cease to operate. The lobster is no more or less present than the rope beside it. That levelling is not incidental. It is the whole point.
