Inaugural Print (1977) was Roy Lichtenstein's contribution to the Inaugural Impressions Portfolio, commissioned by the Democratic National Committee to mark Jimmy Carter's inauguration — one of the few times in his career that he produced work to a specific political occasion, and characteristically he did so on his own terms.

The image accumulates American iconography in the same way his early work accumulated comic-book imagery — not to celebrate it but to examine how it functions.. A raised hand dominates the left half, rendered in red Ben-Day dot patterning against the blue and white of the flag behind it, the gesture of swearing-in present but fragmented, surrounded by stars, stripes, a neoclassical portico, a single watching eye, and passages of diagonal hatching that push the image toward abstraction without dissolving it. Every element is a recognised sign of American civic life, and every one of them has been submitted to the same treatment— flattened, outlined, placed in a composition that reads simultaneously as a political poster and as a formal arrangement of shapes and colours.

The tension between those two readings is what the print is actually about. Lichtenstein was not making a piece of campaign art — he was doing what he had always done, taking a visual system developed for a specific purpose and asking what it looked like when that purpose was set aside. Inaugural Print sits among the most politically specific works in his catalogue while remaining, in its pictorial logic, entirely consistent with everything else he made.
