Roy Lichtenstein

Figures (C.157) closed Roy Lichtenstein's Surrealist Series with its most concentrated picture — two objects that read as figures only through their general form.
Lichtenstein had spent five works building the series' through contact with specific subjects — the rope, the beach, the night sky — and Figures (C.157) applied that territory to its most essential proposition: the human form in undifferentiated space. Without a beach or a night sky to orient the viewer, the figures existed on their own terms — present, but stripped of every contextual anchor that would normally make presence legible.
The Surrealist Series was one of the most subtle of Lichtenstein's art-historical dialogues. Where the Cathedral and Haystack prints had made their conversation with Impressionism unmistakable, and the Bull series had made its examination of abstraction transparent, Surrealism was a tradition whose own logic was less systematic and more resistant to the kind of scrutiny Lichtenstein's work was built around. Figures (C.157) closed the series at the point where that resistance was most productively felt — a picture fully absorbed in the Surrealist tradition, belonging to both without resolving into either.
