Painting in Gold Frame (C.206) is the richest work in Roy Lichtenstein's Paintings Series — the depicted painting enclosed in an elaborately rendered gold frame, the ornamental border asserting itself as strongly as the image it contained. The frame had been a recurring element in painting's relationship to its own institutional context — the gold frame as a sign of value, of museum status, of the conversion of an image into a cultural artefact — and Lichtenstein's rendering of it through woodcut, lithograph, screenprint, and collage made that sign the work's explicit subject.

The depicted painting within the frame was rendered in a landscape mode — swirling marks suggesting trees, water, or sky, the subject ambiguous but clearly naturalistic. This placed the work in dialogue with the long history of landscape painting in gold frames — the tradition of the salon submission, the domestic acquisition of a landscape as evidence of taste and cultural standing. Lichtenstein's version rendered the frame through his own ideas,, the gold indicated through screenprinted colour, the landscape within it processed through the same mark-making system as everything else in the picture.

The combination of woodcut, lithograph, screenprint, and collage gave Painting in Gold Frame (C.206) a depth and richness of surface that corresponded to the decorative subject matter. The collage element allowed the gold frame to be realised with a specificity that purely printed marks could not achieve, the material presence of the collage mimicking the physical assertiveness of the actual gold frame the series was examining.
