Roy Lichtenstein
46.2 × 91.3 in
Imperfect Diptych 46¼ x 91⅜ inches (C.219) belongs to Roy Lichtenstein's Imperfect Series, produced in 1988, in which the ordering logic of Constructivism and hard-edge abstraction was pushed past its own tolerance. The series title declared the intent: geometric abstractions in which the system was broken from the inside, the diagonal lines and colour planes that Mondrian, Albers, and the hard-edge painters had organised into stable resolution here made to collide and refuse it.
The diptych format was well chosen for this subject — the physical gap between the two panels introducing an interruption that the geometry could not bridge, the break itself a kind of imperfection built into the object's structure. Lichtenstein had been drawn to the history of geometric abstraction since his early career placed him in opposition to Abstract Expressionism, but the Imperfect Series approached that history from a different angle — not as an adversary but as a tradition whose own internal contradictions were worth pressing on. The works asked what happened when the utopian certainty of De Stijl and Constructivism was allowed to fail, and found that the failure produced something at least as interesting as the ideal.
