Imperfect (C.220) distils Roy Lichtenstein's Imperfect Series to a single horizontal panel — overlapping triangles in blue, yellow, pale blue, and dot-field black pressing across the surface without resolving into the stable order that the traditions it drew from had made their defining purpose. The black ground that dominates the left half gives the composition a weight that Constructivism and De Stijl had typically avoided, their geometric clarity dependent on light grounds and clear spatial separation. Here the dark field absorbs the triangles that cut across it, the silver collage elements catching light differently from every angle, the whole surface refusing the reading of depth and flatness that hard-edge abstraction had worked to control.
Where Ellsworth Kelly and Frank Stella had pursued geometric painting as a route toward pure visual certainty — the painting as object, its elements self-evident, its meaning exhausted by what was there — Lichtenstein treated their achievement as one more inherited mode worth pressing on. The Imperfect Series found its subject not in geometric order but in the moment that order gave way, and Imperfect (C.220) located that moment with particular precision — a composition so close to resolved that the instability is only visible on sustained looking.
