Roy Lichtenstein
56.8 × 78.5 in
The Interior Series, made by Roy Lichtenstein in 1990 and published in 1991, turned to the represented domestic space of contemporary American life — the rooms of the home as they appeared in interior design magazines, furniture catalogues, and popular illustration.
Bedroom (C.247) presented the bedroom through this lens: blinds, a bed, a small framed artwork on the wall, the space built through Lichtenstein's characteristic print style against a ground of diagonal hatching and Ben-Day dot pattern that structured the walls, floor, and furnishings with mechanical regularity. The Interior Series extended Lichtenstein's examination of the printed imagery of consumer culture into the space of the home.
Where his early work had examined the established language of comic books and advertising, and the later series had turned to art history and architecture, the Interiors returned to the everyday environment of American domestic life. Lichtenstein's treatment was characteristically impersonal. The bedroom was constructed with the cool precision as the architectural entablature or the molecular diagram — the personal space of sleep and privacy given even treatment he extended to any other subject in his catalogue.
