Yellow Vase (C.253) closed Roy Lichtenstein's Interior Series with the most pared-back image in the group — a contemporary living space in which a yellow vase of flowers served as the primary focal point, the room arranged around it with the composure of a still life. The yellow of the vase — bold, declarative, assertively present — connected the work to the still life precedent while keeping it firmly within the interior context the series had established. The vase as a structural centre recalled the Interior works' proximity to the still life genre — the two series, Interior and Six Still Lifes, sharing the same territory of the domestic object in the domestic space.
Lichtenstein had worked through the still life as a genre in its own right in 1974, and the Interior prints returned to it obliquely, the objects within the domestic space carrying the weight that the still life genre had always assigned them. Yellow Vase (C.253) closed this survey not with complexity but with clarity — a domestic space reduced to its most essential elements, the yellow vase asserting its presence with the quiet confidence of a body of work that had nothing left to prove.
