The Japanese bridge at Giverny was among the most celebrated elements of Monet's garden — the green wooden footbridge arching over the lily pond, pictured across numerous canvases as both a structural element of the image and a symbol of the Japanese aesthetic influences that had shaped his garden design. When Roy Lichtenstein included it in Water Lilies with Japanese Bridge (C.265), he was working not just with Monet's subject matter but with one of the most freighted objects in the history of Impressionism. Lichtenstein's bridge was built through the bold print terms of his own vocabulary — bold lines, solid colour, the geometry of the arch clear and unambiguous against the more complex, swirled ground of the stainless steel support.
Where Monet had painted the bridge with an atmospheric dissolution that characterised his treatment of the water and the plants, Lichtenstein gave it the hard solidity of a constructed object — a distinction that mirrored the broader point the Water Lilies Series was making: that the natural and the constructed, the atmospheric and the declarative, occupied different registers that his own method kept firmly separate. The work's image balanced the architectural element of the bridge against the organic complexity of the lilies and water plants, the straight lines of the arc in counterpoint with the curving forms of the vegetation.
Lichtenstein had always been alert to the relationships within his compositions, and Water Lilies with Japanese Bridge showed that alertness at its most considered — a work in which the case being made about Impressionism was also a resolved and satisfying image.
