Nude Reading (C.288) introduces a quieter mood into Roy Lichtenstein’s Nudes Series. Instead of confronting the viewer directly, the figure is absorbed in a book, her attention turned inward rather than outward toward display.

The subject connects the print to the long tradition of women reading in Western art, from Vermeer and Chardin to twentieth-century illustration and magazine imagery. Lichtenstein brings those histories together through his own sharply graphic print style: Ben-Day dots, thick contour lines and flattened colour transform the intimate scene into a distinctly Pop image.

The act of reading changes the atmosphere of the work entirely. The figure appears momentarily detached from the viewer’s gaze, creating a sense of privacy uncommon within the series. That quiet absorption gives Nude Reading a more reflective character while retaining the cool clarity and stylised surface that define Lichtenstein’s late figure prints.
