Roy Lichtenstein

Venetian School I (C.318) was among the most deadpan works Roy Lichtenstein produced in the final years of his career.
The work presented the horizontal slats and vertical dividers of a window blind in pale blue-green and black, the geometry precise and entirely without irony in its execution, the joke entirely in the gap between the title's promise and the picture's delivery. The pun was characteristic of Lichtenstein's long-standing interest in the space between word and image. His earliest comic-book works had exploited the interaction between text and picture; Venetian School I operated the same mechanism with the title alone, the name doing the work that a speech bubble or caption might have done thirty years earlier. The viewer who arrives expecting Titian finds a window fitting; the recognition, when it comes, is both immediate and lingering.
The work sat within a broader late-career preoccupation with everyday domestic objects treated as subjects of complete structural seriousness.
