Roy Lichtenstein
37.6 × 27.6 in
Sweet Dreams Baby! (C.39), made in 1965 as Roy Lichtenstein's contribution to Volume II of the 11 Pop Artists portfolio was among the most energetically composed of his early Pop prints.
The image presents a clenched fist delivering a punch, the speech bubble "SWEET DREAMS, BABY!" in the upper left and the onomatopoeic "POW!" set in bold commercial lettering at the centre.. The source was the war and action comics that Lichtenstein mined throughout his early career. The punch, the sound effect, the whole coded world of comic-book violence: these were the raw materials he elevated to the conditions of fine art by the care and precision of their execution. The Ben-Day dots were applied by hand; the outlines were drawn with the care of a draughtsman; the scale at which the image was presented bore no relation to the small printed panels from which it came.
