Peace Through Chemistry IV (C.99) is the most chromatically varied work in Roy Lichtenstein's Peace Through Chemistry Series — blue, black, and white combining with yellow accents in a image that has a richness and complexity the earlier works had held in reserve. The industrial forms are layered and overlapping, the dot fields varying in density across the surface, the image producing a depth that the more restrained works in the series deliberately avoided. This accumulation of complexity was consistent with Lichtenstein's serial method.
Where the opening works established the terms clearly — accessible, legible, direct — the later works developed those terms toward greater ambiguity and density. Peace Through Chemistry IV (C.99) presented the industrial imagery at its most fully elaborated, the cooler detachment of the earlier prints giving way to something more chromatic and concentrated.
Lichtenstein made the Peace Through Chemistry Series at a moment when his attention to non-art sources — industrial diagrams, scientific illustration, technical drawing — was part of a broader widening of his output.
