At a Clip (2023) runs black and yellow horizontal lines across the plate, AT A above CLIP below, the serif letterforms built from the same striated marks that surround them — gold and black dashes that constitute both the interference and the text itself. Unlike Baby Jet, where the letters emerge as pale absences in a dark field, here the words are made of colour: the yellow lines concentrate and thicken within the letterforms, giving them a warm, almost gilded presence against the lighter ground. The phrase is more legible than others in the suite, the yellow doing work that pure black and white cannot.

AT A CLIP is American vernacular for moving fast — briskly, efficiently, at a good pace. The phrase has the same register as Ruscha's earliest word choices: the casual, idiomatic, slightly dated expressions that punctuate American speech without announcing themselves as significant. He had been drawn to this territory since the 1960s, finding in the throwaway phrase the same democratic appeal he found in petrol stations and parking structures — subjects that rewarded attention precisely because nobody thought they deserved it.

The horizontal striations that run through the entire 2023 etching suite connect to something specific in Ruscha's biography: his early training in commercial graphic design, his absorption of the visual texture of mid-century American print media, the way information was transmitted through newsprint and broadcast before digital clarity flattened everything. The interference in these plates is not purely formal. It carries the memory of a particular way of seeing — the scan line, the half-tone dot, the slight degradation that accompanied reproduction before it became invisible. AT A CLIP, moving fast, caught in a medium that slows everything down.
