Zat So by Ed Ruscha (2023) runs two cross-hatched grids across its plate — black horizontal lines and yellow vertical lines intersecting to create a woven, almost textile ground — with ZAT above SO below in large serif capitals that emerge from the interference as darker concentrations of mark, the letters built from the same system of lines that surrounds them. The deckle edges of the handmade paper are visible at all sides. It is the most static and the most centred of the 2023 etching suite, the two short words sitting squarely in the frame like a challenge that isn't going anywhere.

ZAT SO is American vernacular of a very particular vintage — the contracted, slightly comic scepticism of someone who has heard a claim and isn't buying it. It is almost the speech of vaudeville and early radio, to the Midwest and the South, to a register of American spoken language that had already begun to feel archaic by the time Ruscha was growing up in Oklahoma City in the 1940s. He had been collecting exactly this kind of phrase since his earliest text works — not the official language of signs and institutions but the casual, throwaway, slightly worn expressions that circulate through American speech without anyone deciding to keep them. ZAT SO is the verbal equivalent of a roadside structure nobody has bothered to demolish: still standing, still readable, no longer in active use.

The grid structure distinguishes this print from others in the suite. Where Baby Jet and Final Say use purely horizontal or diagonal striations, Zat So introduces a vertical element that crosses the horizontal marks at ninety degrees, producing a surface that feels woven.. The yellow verticals give the plate warmth; the black horizontals give it weight. Together they create a ground that is more stable and more patient than the rushing interference of the other etchings — an appropriate setting for a phrase that is, at its core, a request to slow down and say that again.
