Stick Up by Ed Ruscha (2007) offers something unusual in his output — a work with no text at all. Five white rectangles of varying sizes are distributed across a densely worked olive-green ground, the surface textured with horizontal striations that suggest woven fabric, crumpled terrain, or the grain of old wood. The rectangles are clean, flat, and precise against that organic ground — three in the upper portion, two below, their arrangement asymmetric but considered. The title, printed small at the base of the sheet, is the only language in the image.

STICK UP carries the Western mythology that Ruscha had absorbed growing up in Oklahoma and confirmed on his drive to Los Angeles in 1956: the holdup, the standoff, the moment of enforced stillness that runs through American popular culture from dime novels to Hollywood westerns. Read against the five white rectangles, the title repositions them entirely — the clean geometric forms becoming something closer to raised hands, the arranged shapes reading as the space where figures would stand if this were a figurative work. Without those two words at the base of the sheet, the composition is a formal exercise. With them, it carries the tension of an interrupted scene.

The textured ground amplifies the association. Olive-green and striated, it reads as landscape — scrubland, the kind of terrain that appears in the background of a western, the setting for an encounter or a discovery.. Ruscha had been interested throughout his career in how minimal visual information could carry the weight of narrative association, and Stick Up is among his most economical demonstrations of that principle: a three-colour lithograph in an edition of thirty-five that contains no figures, no action, and no depicted setting, but implies all three through the relationship between five white shapes and a title that changes everything about how they are read.
