Hollywood (Orange and Brown) by Ed Ruscha is among his most cinematic works. The sign sits in the lower right of a wide panoramic format, white letters against a dark hillside silhouette, the sky above moving from deep chocolate brown at the top through a warm middle register to a band of pure amber-orange at the horizon — the colour of a Los Angeles sunset filtered through smog, or the opening frame of a film that wants you to know exactly where you are before anything happens.
The panoramic format is deliberate. Hollywood has always understood the wide shot — the establishing frame that places the action, that says here is the city, here is the hill, here is the sign that tells you what this place means before a single character has spoken. Ruscha, who had been absorbing the grammar of cinema since arriving in Los Angeles in 1956, understood that the Hollywood sign was already a piece of film language before he touched it, a location marker that the industry had turned into a symbol of itself. By 1968 the sign had appeared in the opening frames of more films than anyone had counted, the shorthand for a certain kind of American ambition: you are in Hollywood, where dreams are manufactured at scale.
What Ruscha adds is the palette. Orange and brown strips the scene of its pictorial naturalism — this is not how a sunset looks, exactly, but how a sunset feels when it has been processed through decades of Technicolor and wide-screen cinematography, the colours pushed to their expressive limit. The sign, pale and three-dimensional against the dark hill, reads as both monument and ghost, present enough to name the place and distant enough to suggest that the place it names has always been slightly elsewhere.
Produced as a screenprint in 1968 in an edition of one hundred, it remains one of the essential works in Ruscha's Hollywood series — a print that understands its subject from the inside.
