Tool & Die by Ed Ruscha crops a white industrial building to its upper corner, the roofline meeting at a sharp angle in the centre of the horizontal format, TOOL & DIE lettered small on the left-hand facade in plain sans-serif type. The sky behind the structure is the most atmospheric in the Archi-Props series — soft grey clouds moving through a pale ground, the whole upper portion of the image in slow motion, the building holding its sharp geometric edge against weather that has no interest in geometry.

Tool and die is a precision manufacturing trade — the making of the tools and moulds that allow other things to be made, the foundational layer of industrial production that everything else depends on but that most people never think about. It is the kind of business that operates in low buildings on industrial estates at the edges of cities, the kind that has a hand-painted sign, the kind that kept the American manufacturing economy running through the mid-twentieth century and that began to disappear as that economy restructured in the 1980s and 1990s. By 1996, when Ruscha made this print, the trade had been in decline for a decade, the industrial infrastructure of cities like Detroit and Cleveland contracting as production moved elsewhere.

The Archi-Props series was made during exactly that period of restructuring, and TOOL & DIE sits within it as one of the more quietly elegiac works — a precise industrial term on a clean white building under a shifting sky, the whole image suggesting that the building is still standing, the sign still legible, but the activity it names increasingly historical. Ruscha had always treated the commercial landscape of America with the attentiveness of a documentarian, and Tool & Die extends that attention to a subject that was in the process of becoming a record.
