Yayoi Kusama

Madder Coloured Cloud (1997) by Yayoi Kusama is an continuous field with no focal point, no horizon and no figure — the entire image built from a single repeated unit, small rounded cells packed together across the full extent of the print in reds, oranges and yellows that shift in intensity without breaking the continuity of the pattern. This is the Infinity Nets logic applied in colour. Kusama began the net paintings in New York in 1958, covering vast canvases with a single obsessively repeated arc-stroke until the individual mark was absorbed into the whole — what she described as self-obliteration, the self lost in the accumulation of its own gesture.
Madder Coloured Cloud belongs to the same family of thinking, though here the unit is not an arc but a cell, and the colour is not monochrome but a warm spectrum of madder red moving through orange to yellow, the lighter tones drifting across the surface in loose cloud-like formations that give the work its title without illustrating it literally. There is no hierarchy in the image. The eye moves across the image without settling — the cell-like ground offering no entry point and no exit, attention distributed evenly across the whole.
