Pumpkin (White T) (1992) by Yayoi Kusama strips the motif back to black and white — no colour to carry the image, just repeated dots and the form it maps, the pumpkin holding its ground through pattern and contrast alone. The dots follow the curvature of the pumpkin in bands, graduating from small marks along the ribs to larger circles across the widest areas, describing volume with the same precision as the colour works but with a starker clarity. Without yellow or red to push forward, the form earns its presence entirely through the organisation of the marks — the structure of the dot field doing work that colour usually shares.
The angular network in the background fills the surrounding field in the same monochrome, the irregular segments pressing in against the pumpkin from all sides. The contrast between the ordered pattern on the form and the more fragmented pattern behind it keeps the two elements distinct without separating them — figure and ground built from the same vocabulary, differentiated by structure rather than colour.
