Yayoi Kusama's Pumpkin RT (2004) adds lamé to the screenprint process — a metallic thread woven into the ink that gives this variant a reflective quality absent from the other works in the 2004 Pumpkins portfolio. The red dots scaling from small along the ribs to larger circles across the widest areas describe the volume of the pumpkin in the same systematic way as the other variants, but the lamé catches light differently across the sheet, introducing a subtle shimmer that shifts depending on the viewing angle. The yellow of the pumpkin is not flat — it has a warmth and depth that the standard screenprint versions lack, the metallic component giving the colour a slightly burnished quality.
The red ground is broken into a angular network of lines in the same yellow as the pumpkin, the two colours sharing the image in the same proportions but in inverted positions — yellow dominant on the pumpkin, red dominant in the ground, each present in the other's territory through the line work and the dots. the image is tightly balanced, the warm tones holding close to each other in temperature whilst remaining distinct in saturation. Produced in an edition of 120 alongside the other variants in the portfolio, Pumpkin RT is distinguished within the series by its material rather than its colour combination — the RT designation marking this as the lamé variant, a single departure from the flat screenprint process that runs through the rest of the portfolio. Kusama has always been attentive to the physical qualities of her printed work, and the addition of lamé here extends the investigation into what the pumpkin motif can carry beyond ink on paper.
