Yayoi Kusama's Napping Pumpkin (1993) places the pumpkin on its side — the ribs fanning outward horizontally from a central stem, the form low and wide across the image, settled into the black ground rather than rising from it. The change in orientation transforms the character of the motif entirely. Where the upright pumpkins in the series have a presence that is grounded and contained, the napping pumpkin spreads laterally, the lobes extending outward like a flattened crown, the form appearing to rest rather than stand.
The dots follow the curve of each lobe in rows that scale from small at the outer edges to large bold circles toward the centre, the same tracing system as the vertical works but here describing a form that reads as relaxed rather than upright. The black ground is broken into a web of white lines — a fractured tessellation that fills every corner and presses in from all sides. Against it the yellow holds with the same intensity as the other yellow-on-black variants, but the horizontal spread of the pumpkin gives the image a different weight distribution, the form occupying the lower half of the image and leaving a darker mass above it.
