Yayoi Kusama's Pumpkin (2000) layers three distinct visual systems within a single image — the pumpkin at the centre, a dark fractured halo immediately surrounding it, and a field of white dots on red extending across the outer zone, each one operating according to its own logic whilst holding together as a whole. The pumpkin itself is yellow on black, the dots scaling from small along the ribs to large circles across the widest areas, the form rising tall and narrow from the base. Around it, a corona of dark geometric cells — closer to the Infinity Net vocabulary than to the pumpkin's repeated dots — creates a spiky, irregular border that separates the central form from the outer field.
Beyond that, white dots on a deep red ground cover the remaining area, the dot scale here larger and more loosely distributed than on the pumpkin itself, the pattern familiar but applied differently. The work was produced using silkscreen with collage, a combination that introduces subtle variations in texture across the sheet — the printed elements precise and flat, the collage adding slight shifts in surface that prevent any single area from reading as completely uniform. This material complexity gives the image a different quality from the standard screenprints in the series.
