Yayoi Kusama's Pumpkin 2000 (yellow) takes the yellow-on-black configuration that has become the most recognised iteration of this motif and pushes it to its most resolved expression — the pumpkin large, low and wide, filling the image from edge to edge with a presence that feels final rather than exploratory. The black dots run in dense rows along the outer ribs, building to large bold circles across the central sections, the sequence describing the volume of the pumpkin with a precision that has become more assured across the decade since the 1990 Kusama 142. The stem at the top is rendered in deep black, surrounded by a tight cluster of small dots that gradually open outward into the broader dot field above — a detail that anchors the whole image at its topmost point and gives the eye a place to begin before moving down across the curves.

The irregular lattice of yellow lines in the black ground fills every corner of the image, the irregular tessellation surrounding the motif. Unlike the 2004 portfolio works where the background sits clearly behind the pumpkin, here the ground feels closer — the pumpkin occupying so much of the image that the background is reduced to a narrow border, the form and its setting in close proximity. Produced in 2000 in an edition of 100, this work sits between the earlier explorations of the 1990s and the large 2004 Pumpkins portfolio — a moment when the motif had fully matured but before it was codified into the colour-designation system of the later editions. The yellow designation in the title distinguishes it from other 2000 variants, the colour named explicitly where the earlier works relied on catalogue numbers alone.
