Yayoi Kusama's Mushrooms (1995) takes one of the most psychedelically charged subjects in late twentieth-century visual culture and renders it in the precise black and white vocabulary of an etching — fourteen mushrooms of different species and sizes distributed across a white field scattered with large black dots, each fungus treated as a distinct formal problem. The mushrooms vary enormously — a large flat-capped specimen dominates the centre, its cap filled with a dense labyrinthine pattern of curving lines that reads almost like a topographic map; beside it a smaller mushroom carries large irregular dots across its cap; others have fine parallel lines, dot sequences, or a combination of both, each one given a different internal structure that distinguishes it from its neighbours. The variety of species is genuine — these are not generic mushrooms but distinct botanical forms, the fly agaric shape alongside flatter varieties and narrow-stemmed field mushrooms, the range suggesting close observation of actual specimens.

The white field behind them is scattered with large black dots of varying sizes distributed at irregular intervals — the same dot vocabulary that appears across Kusama's work from this period but here deployed as a background element rather than as the primary subject, the dots floating around the mushrooms without attaching to them, the two systems coexisting without one organising the other. The choice of mushrooms connects directly to the countercultural moment Kusama inhabited in New York in the late 1960s — the happenings, the naked body paint events, the performances that placed her at the intersection of art and the psychedelic scene that was reshaping American culture. The mushroom by 1995 carried all of that history, and Kusama's decision to submit it to her etching process — precise, methodical, the opposite of psychedelic abandon — gives the image a dry wit that is rare in her work.
