Yayoi Kusama's Hat (Red) (1983) renders the hat in white on red — the form pale and almost luminous against the saturated crimson field that fills every corner of the image, the two tones held in close balance throughout the composition. The hat is wide and low, its crown built from concentric tiers rising toward a rounded top, each band mapped in dots that shift from small marks at the outer edges to large circles toward the centre. The sequence gives the crown its sense of volume and weight, the rounded structure of the hat described with the careful accumulation of repeated marks that runs throughout Kusama's work of this period. The brim extends outward in a fine grid of rectangular marks, whilst a curved element to the right — a feather or decorative band — carries a diagonal pattern that separates it visually from both crown and brim. The image remains almost entirely monochromatic, red and white dominating every surface without interruption from a third colour.

The red field behind the hat carries an irregular web of white lines extending across the full sheet, a fractured network that surrounds the form without receding from it. The warm red-and-white palette gives the work a temperature closer to the early pumpkin prints than to the darker Hats and Shoes variations built on black grounds. The hat sits low within the composition, its brim nearly touching the lower edge, the pale crown holding its clarity against the dense red field through the concentration of dots across its surface. Hat (Red) belongs to the Hats and Shoes portfolio of the early 1980s — a body of work in which Kusama turned personal accessories into vehicles for repetition, pattern and surface transformation, treating fashion objects with the same intensity she brought to pumpkins, flowers and nets.
