Yayoi Kusama's Hat-S (Kusama 19) is the most unusual of the hat works — rendered entirely in black and white, the hat itself almost lost within the surrounding field, the distinction between object and setting maintained through structure alone rather than colour or tonal contrast. The hat sits at the centre of the image, its crown built from circles of varying sizes — large white circles with dark outlines and smaller filled dots packed together across the surface, the form described through the accumulation of rounded marks rather than through the dot sequences that define the pumpkin works. A fan-like element extends to the left, its surface in fine concentric arcs that contrast with the more scattered arrangement of the hat body, and a diagonal hatched passage runs across the centre, a third distinct vocabulary within the hat itself.

The brim extends outward in an irregular mass of dots and small marks, the boundary between the hat and the surrounding field kept deliberately ambiguous. the surface behind is a dense black structure of interlocking lines forming a large-scale irregular pattern, the shapes substantial enough to read as individual units pressing in from every direction. The hat sits within this field without a clear border, the white forms emerging from and receding into the dark structure around them, the image requiring careful attention to resolve the object from its surroundings. Kusama's relationship with fashion and personal adornment has been one of the most consistent threads in her output.
