Ed Ruscha's Jet Baby (2011) is the Mountain Series at its most cinematic. A single peak fills the picture plane, its rock face rendered in deep burnt orange and rust, snow catching as pale blue at the ridges. Behind it the sky moves through a full spectrum — yellow at the horizon, through amber and scarlet, into deep purple and navy at the top. JET sits above BABY, both in white condensed capitals, the letterforms cutting clean and cool across the heated surface beneath them.

The palette does most of the work. Where other Mountain Series prints hold the landscape at a cool remove — blue, grey, atmospheric — Jet Baby turns the heat up entirely, producing a mountain that looks less like geology than like a film still, the kind of saturated western sunset that Hollywood cinematographers spent decades trying to reproduce. Ruscha had absorbed Los Angeles's relationship to its own image from the moment he arrived in 1956, and that city has always understood landscape primarily as backdrop, as production value, as something to be lit and framed. The mountain here is lit like a set.

Into that drama Ruscha inserts two words that couldn't care less about it. JET BABY carries the casual intimacy of mid-century American slang — affectionate, slightly absurd, belonging to a world of diners and drive-ins not alpine grandeur. The phrase deflates the spectacle without dismissing it. The mountain remains monumental; the text remains breezy; neither yields. That refusal to resolve is the move Ruscha had been making since his first word paintings, the same even-handed treatment applied to petrol stations, parking lots, and now this: a peak that has waited ten million years to have JET BABY printed across it.

Produced as a lithograph trial proof in an edition of 50, Jet Baby is among the warmest and most immediately pleasurable works in the Mountain Series — a print that rewards the eye before it rewards the mind, and then rewards the mind anyway.
