Sign in Sandstorm (2021) is the quietest of the three Sign works, and in some ways the most unsettling for it. A STATE LINE marker — outline lettering in hollow capitals, mounted on posts above a segmented ground that reads as pavement or road surface — sits within a field of pale cream scattered with fine gold and amber particles. The storm here is barely a storm at all. Where Sign in Mud Storm coats its surface in dense brown spatter, the sandstorm in this print is almost imperceptible, a fine dispersal of flecks that you might mistake for the texture of the paper itself. The sign stands in near-perfect clarity.

That restraint changes the conceptual weight considerably. Sign in Mud Storm confronts its sign with visible force; Sign in Sandstorm surrounds its sign with something more insidious — a slow, accumulating dispersal that doesn't obscure so much as it quietly permeates. STATE LINE is a more abstract boundary than CITY LIMITS: less a marker of a specific place than a declaration that here, the rules change. Cross this line and you are in a different jurisdiction, subject to different laws, different taxes, different speed limits. The sandstorm recognises none of that. It moves across state lines without paperwork.

Ruscha had been drawn to the infrastructure of American civic life since his first artist books in the early 1960s — not the grand monuments but the functional apparatus, the signs and structures that organise how people move through and understand the landscape. The Sign series, produced as direct gravures in black and brown in an edition of 40 each, returns to that interest in his eighties with a different atmosphere: less catalogue, more elegy. The signs are still standing. The world around them is in gentle, continuous motion.
