History Kids (2013) puts a cobalt and amber mountain against a sky that has gone fully operatic — deep orange-red with a pale circular glow at the top, the kind of colour that sits somewhere between a western sunset and a special effect. The peak rises in brilliant blue, its surface textured with gold and rust where the rock breaks through the snow. HISTORY sits above KIDS in white condensed capitals, the letters sitting across the mountain face with the same even-handedness Ruscha brings to every inscription, neither shouting nor whispering.

The phrase is the most compressed kind of Ruscha pairing — two words that don't explain each other but that generate a charge through proximity. HISTORY implies weight, accumulation, the long view; KIDS implies exactly the opposite — the immediate, the unformed, the generation that hasn't yet decided what to do with what it's been given. Together they raise a question without posing it directly: what gets transmitted, and to whom, and in what condition does it arrive? Ruscha doesn't answer. He places the words on a mountain and lets the mountain sit there.

The Mountain Series, produced at Hamilton Press across the 2010s, consistently applied this logic to the western landscape — a terrain long freighted with American mythology, the frontier narrative, the promise of space and renewal. Ruscha had grown up in Oklahoma before driving Route 66 to Los Angeles in 1956, and his relationship to that mythology was always that of someone who had absorbed it from the outside, who understood its power and its construction simultaneously. The mountains in these prints are not observed from life. They are sourced from photographs, reorganised on the picture plane, submitted to the same flat graphic logic as a petrol station or a parking structure. The drama of the colour does not change that fundamental neutrality. It just makes it more visible.
