Created in 1952 as part of an edition of 300, the work takes its title from the French term for a ship's figurehead, establishing an immediate connection between the sculptural object and nautical tradition.
The work presents a white earthenware body painted with confident blue brushstrokes that define facial features across its curved surface. On the main vessel, Picasso has rendered a profile view with characteristic economy—a curved line suggests the bridge of a nose, while circular forms indicate eyes, one with a small brown pupil at its centre. The blue pigment flows freely across the ceramic surface, creating organic shapes that echo both human physiognomy and the undulating forms of waves or sea creatures.
The piece's most striking element is its arched handle, which rises from the body like a bridge or the curved prow of a vessel. This architectural feature transforms the ceramic from a simple pitcher into something more sculptural, reinforcing the maritime associations of its title. The handle itself bears subtle brown markings that complement the vessel's primary decoration, while its generous proportions give the work a sense of monumentality despite its intimate scale.
The left side of the ceramic reveals additional painted motifs—brown circular forms that could represent portholes, barnacles, or abstract decorations. These elements are applied with the same directness that characterises Picasso's approach to the medium, where the artist embraced the urgency of working with clay and glaze rather than pursuing the refinement of traditional ceramics.
Figure de proue was created during Picasso's most intensive period of ceramic production at the Madoura pottery in Vallauris, where he had been working since 1947. The vessel reflects his interest in transforming everyday objects into carriers of mythological and cultural meaning. By 1952, Picasso had fully absorbed the technical possibilities of ceramics, using the medium to explore themes of classical antiquity and Mediterranean culture that had long informed his work.
The piece embodies the playful yet serious approach that defined Picasso's ceramic output—a functional object transformed into a sculptural statement that bridges the domestic and the heroic, the quotidian pitcher and the mythic figurehead that guides ships through dangerous waters.
