Executed in 1962 as an artist’s proof, the piece sits within a phase when Picasso had fully absorbed the reduction technique, using it not just for colour, but as a way of simplifying and tightening his way of building images.
The figure dominates the composition. Shown frontally, with arms drawn across the body, she holds a sense of weight and presence despite the economy of line. Picasso builds the form through a balance of sweeping curves and sharper, more angular cuts, allowing the body to feel both constructed and fluid. The face is reduced further still, its features simplified into a mask-like structure that resists naturalism.
Colour plays a central role. Deep terracotta and warm brown tones sit against a pale ground, creating a contrast that gives the figure solidity without relying on modelling. The flatness of the linocut surface is never disguised—instead, Picasso uses it to his advantage, letting colour and line carry the entire work. The background is kept deliberately spare, keeping the focus on the figure’s scale and presence.
By the early 1960s, Picasso had been working with linocut for nearly a decade, developing the reduction method after his introduction to the medium in Vallauris. The process—cutting progressively into a single block—demanded both precision and commitment, as each stage removed the possibility of revision. In works like this, that constraint becomes part of the language, pushing the image towards clarity and directness.
The return to the seated nude is also significant. In his later years, Picasso repeatedly revisited classical themes, but approached them with a stripped-back, almost instinctive handling. The figure here carries echoes of ancient sculpture, yet is entirely reworked through a modern, sensibility.
Nu Assis captures that balance cleanly. It is direct, controlled and unembellished, showing how Picasso could take a familiar subject and reduce it to something immediate and resolved through line, colour and form.
