The work depicts a chaotic scene of bacchanalian figures—satyrs, nymphs, and fantastical creatures—intertwined within a complex network of rhythmic linear patterns that animate the entire work. At the centre, an owl presides over the scene, its wide eyes and prominent beak rendered with characteristic Picasso directness, while around it writhe nude figures caught in various states of abandon and transformation.
The image comes from Picasso's intensive exploration of linocut techniques in the late 1950s, when he was collaborating closely with the master printer Hidalgo Arnéra at Vallauris. This period saw him refine the reduction method, where successive layers of colour are printed from the same block as areas are progressively carved away. In Bacchanale au Hibou, this approach allows for the interplay between the warm taupe ground and the bold black linear elements that define form and space.
The mythological subject matter reflects Picasso's long engagement with classical antiquity, a theme that had occupied him since his neo-classical period of the 1920s but returned with renewed focus in his later years. The bacchanale—a frenzied celebration in honour of Bacchus—provided a framework for exploring energy, excess, and transformation. The owl, traditionally associated with wisdom and Athena, introduces a counterpoint within the scene, acting as a fixed presence amid the surrounding movement.
Formally, the work shows clearly Picasso's command of the linocut medium's particular qualities. The bold, flowing lines create a sense of movement across the surface, while the interplay of positive and negative space generates rhythm. The hatching and cross-hatching throughout the work add variation without disrupting the overall cohesion.
