Created in 1950 as a wood engraving in colours on Van Gelder paper, this work from an edition of 150 underlines Picasso's engagement with traditional printmaking techniques whilst maintaining his revolutionary approach to form and space.
La Casserole Émaillée is built around three primary objects arranged on a wooden table: a geometric white and grey jug, a brass candlestick with flickering flame, and a blue enamel saucepan that gives the work its title. Each element is constructed through Picasso's characteristic method of simultaneous multiple viewpoints, where the jug's angular faceting reveals both profile and frontal aspects, and the saucepan's cylindrical form is flattened into geometric planes of brilliant blue and grey.
By 1950, Picasso was dividing his time between Paris and the South of France, turning increasingly to the objects of domestic life. The brass candlestick, rendered in rich yellows and ochres, serves as both illumination source and compositional anchor, its traditional form set against the more abstract treatment of the surrounding objects. The wooden table surface, depicted in warm brown tones, provides a unifying base that grounds the La Casserole Émaillée's geometric fragmentation.
Picasso's handling of the wood engraving medium signals his technical mastery, using the natural grain and texture of the woodblock to enhance the work's tactile qualities. The grey background is built up through careful cross-hatching and tonal variation, creating depth whilst maintaining the flat, iconic quality of the foreground objects. The blue of the enamel pan particularly benefits from this approach, its colour intensified by the surrounding neutral palette.
The subject matter reflects Picasso's interest in the transformation of everyday French kitchen implements into vehicles for formal experimentation. The candlestick's flame, reduced to a simple black teardrop against white, becomes an almost calligraphic element that punctuates the work's horizontal rhythm. La Casserole Émaillée reflects Picasso's ability to find artistic weight in ordinary objects, turning a simple kitchen scene into a focused study of form, light, and representation.
