Yayoi Kusama's Pumpkins and Fruits (1993) places her most familiar motif within one of the oldest subjects in Western painting — the still life, the fruit bowl, the arrangement of organic forms on a table — and submits the whole tradition to her own structure. The basket sits at the centre, a yellow vessel covered in its own dot pattern, holding pumpkins, bananas, grapes, cherries and a fig arranged with the same careful attention to variety that Chardin or Cézanne brought to their bowls and tables. Each object carries a different pattern — the pumpkin in its characteristic graduating dots, the bananas in a looser arrangement of marks that follows their curved length, the grapes as a dense cluster of red circles, the cherries small and polka-dotted, the fig alone on the red tablecloth in black and white.

Every element is individually described, the image held together not by a unified style but by the consistent principle that no surface is left unmarked. The still life as a genre had always been about the relationship between objects and their setting, between the perishable and the painted, between what decays and what endures. Kusama takes that tradition and removes its melancholy entirely — there is no sense of time passing in this image, no suggestion that the fruit will rot. pattern preserves everything at the same pitch of attention, the pumpkin and the grape and the banana all equally covered, equally present, equally part of the same investigation. The fractured white web of the black ground fills the space behind the arrangement with the same density as the objects in front of it, the background as activated as the still life itself, the image leaving no area at rest.
