Yayoi Kusama's Pumpkin God (1993) takes the motif she has described as her most grounding subject and renders it in orange on black — the form elongated and monumental, its ribs swelling outward in exaggerated curves that give the pumpkin an almost totemic presence quite different from the compact, rounded forms of the later portfolio works. The orange dots scale from small along the narrow upper section to large bold circles across the widest passages of the contours, the sequence tracing a form that is far more anatomical and strange than the conventional pumpkin shape — the curves pinching inward at the waist before swelling out again at the base, the whole form suggesting something between a vegetable and a figure. The fractured orange lines of the black ground press in from all sides, the broken interlocking pattern radiating outward from the pumpkin as though the form is generating the surface around it rather than sitting within it.

Kusama's relationship with the pumpkin began in childhood in Matsumoto, where the vegetable grew in her family's plant nursery. She has spoken of it with an intimacy that goes beyond formal interest — describing it as a friend, as a presence that responded to her attention, as a form whose "generous unpretentiousness" she found stabilising at a time when her hallucinations were making the world around her feel unstable and threatening. The title Pumpkin God takes that intimacy to its conceptual extreme, elevating the vegetable to something sacred — not ironically, but with the same directness with which Kusama has always treated the subjects that matter most to her. The orange palette gives the image a heat and intensity that the yellow and red works approach differently — warmer than red, more fiery than yellow, the colour sitting at the point where the two meet.
