Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Nets (1986) takes the net structure in a terracotta and black palette — warm, earthy tones replacing the cool blue-on-white or red-on-grey of other works in the series, the irregular polygons covering the sheet in black lines on a burnt orange-red ground that gives the image a different temperature from any other version in her printed output. The structure is the same continuous field that runs through every iteration of the net — no focal point, no hierarchy, the black lines forming irregular polygons of varying sizes across the full extent of the sheet, the eye moving without settling, the pattern pressing against every edge. But the terracotta ground changes the reading entirely.

Where the grey and white grounds give the nets a cool, analytical quality, the warm red-brown here gives the image a heat and earthiness closer to the surface of fired clay or the cracked ground of dry earth than to the clinical flatness of the monochrome versions. Kusama had been working with the net structure since 1958, when she arrived in New York and began covering canvases of considerable scale with a single repeated arc-stroke — a process she described as both meditative and compulsive, the mark repeated until it ceased to feel like a choice. By 1986, thirteen years after returning to Japan, the net had been translated into print across multiple colour combinations and formats, each new version testing what a change in palette alone could do to a structure that otherwise remained constant. The terracotta variant is among the least frequently encountered in her printed work, the colour combination sitting outside the range of the more celebrated blue, red and grey versions.
