Infinity Net, 1986 by Yayoi Kusama was created during a period when the artist was continuing to develop the ideas that had occupied her since her arrival in New York three decades earlier. By the mid-1980s, Kusama had already established herself as one of the most distinctive voices in post-war art, known for transforming simple repeated forms into immersive visual experiences that challenged conventional ideas of space and perception.

Set against a warm orange ground, the print is covered by a dense black network that extends across the entire surface. The irregular structure creates a sense of continual expansion, with each element contributing to a larger field that appears to stretch beyond the boundaries of the paper. Although constructed from a simple repeated motif, the work avoids uniformity, allowing subtle variations to generate movement and complexity throughout.

The Infinity Net series occupies a central position within Kusama's career. First developed in the late 1950s, these works became the foundation for many of the ideas that would later appear in her paintings, sculptures and immersive installations. By returning repeatedly to the same motif across different decades, Kusama transformed a personal visual language into one of the most recognisable bodies of work in contemporary art.

Created at a time when institutions and collectors were beginning to reassess her contribution to post-war art, Infinity Net, 1986 demonstrates the consistency and ambition that underpin her practice. The work connects her groundbreaking early years in New York with the international recognition that would follow, highlighting a series that remains fundamental to understanding her artistic legacy.
