Yayoi Kusama's Pumpkin (1992) renders the form in white on red — the pumpkin appearing almost spectral against the saturated crimson ground, the dot sequence running in red against the white interior of the ribs, the two colours reversed from the more familiar configurations of the series. The pumpkin is wide and low, its broad contours spreading outward from a small stem, the form settled and grounded rather than upright. The red dots scale from small along the outer edges to large circles across the central sections, tracing the volume of the form in the same systematic sequence as the other works in the series but here in a palette that gives the image a completely different character — the white form emerging from the red ground with a clarity that has something of a photographic negative about it, the pumpkin present as an absence of colour rather than a presence of it.
The organic broken pattern of the red ground — curved, rounded shapes packed together across every corner — is the same system seen in the 1983 white-on-red variant, suggesting that in the early 1990s Kusama was still working with this more organic background structure before the geometric broken lines of the later series became dominant. The curves of the background echo the curves of the pumpkin form, the two systems closer in character than the angular geometric grounds of the 2000s works. Kusama's systematic exploration of colour combinations across the pumpkin series across the late 1980s and early 1990s has the quality of a sustained investigation — the same form tested across different chromatic conditions, the conclusions neither illustrated nor explained but simply produced, one variant after another, each one complete in itself.
